Cub Scouts: Pack 23 is ready for another year!

9/17/2018

It's that time again, School is back in so we are gearing up for another great year in Scouting.  There is a lot of important information in this email so please be sure to read the entire email carefully as we've got some changes to our program year.

PACK MEETINGS
As is tradition, we hold Pack Meetings on the third Wednesday of every month at Seaman's Lodge (when possible).   The first Pack meeting of the year will occur on Wednesday the 19th, starting promptly at 6:30pm.  For those busy families who can't fit in dinner, we'll do pizza for $1/slice between 6:00 and 6:30.  Here's the meeting schedule through the end of the year:
  • September 19th @ Seaman's Lodge
  • October 17th @ Seaman's Lodge
  • November 14th @ Seaman's Lodge
  • December 19th @ Seaman's Lodge

UPCOMING DEN MEETINGS
Den meeting times and locations will be coordinated among the Den's themselves.  Many of you returning Scouts have likely already been in touch with your Den leaders.  Please be advised that we are recommending that Den's meet before the September Pack Meeting so that everyone is engaged for the upcoming year.  Please reach out to your Den Leader to determine if/when your September meeting will occur.  If you are new to Cub Scouts and don't yet have a Den, we'll get you plugged in as soon as possible - please be patient as we try to get that sorted out.

FALL CAMPOUT
Mark your calendars for the weekend of 9/29-9/30.  We will be returning to Camp Marin Sierra for our annual family campout.  Moms, Dads, Brothers, and Sisters all welcome. We'll do fun activities Saturday afternoon, Fire with Flag Retirement Saturday Night, and a Scavenger hunt on Sunday morning.  The Pack provides Dinner, Breakfast, and a snack late Sunday morning.  Full details will be coming shortly.

POPCORN SALES
The annual Popcorn fundraiser is our one significant fundraising effort for the year.  Similar to last year,  we will have several weekends where the boys sell popcorn in front of a store.  In addition, we will be encouraging the boys to sell individually to friends and family where they can place orders for popcorn to be delivered at a later date.

Popcorn sales is the primary fundraiser for the pack.  This fundraiser offsets the costs to operate the pack and supports our Fall and Spring overnight trips (among many other things).  The more we sell, the more affordable Scouting becomes for everyone in the pack, the more fun things we can do, and the more we can give back to the community

Here's the dates we're doing the storefront sales.  Please set aside time for your boys to sign-up for a shift - it's critical that everyone pitch in!  We'll send another email with full details covering popcorn sales as time gets closer.
  • October 6th and 7th
  • October 13th & 14th

PARENT VOLUNTEERS
Cub Scouting simply doesn't operate without the parents.  The benefits of Scouting are directly correlated to the time and effort put forth by the parents.  This year is especially crucial for the packin that we will lose many of our leadership as they bridge with their boys to Boy Scouts in the spring.  We are asking that each family be prepared to commit to helping out the Pack in one area - large or small. With everyone's help, we can create a life changing Scouting experience for these boys.  If you have ideas for new activities - we want to hear from you too!  We'll spend some time discussing this with the parents at the first meeting.

Lastly, a huge thanks to all of the past and present Den Leaders and Volunteers.  This whole operation simply doesn't work without you.

I look forward to seeing everyone for the first Pack meeting on Wednesday, September 19th.  Don't hesitate to reach out if you have any questions.

Thanks,
Justin

February Update

2/15/2018

Hi Folks,
Here's what's going one in Pack 23 this month:

LEADERSHIP TRAINING - 4/27 & 4/28
In order to meet the Boy Scouts minimum requirements, we need to have a trained leader on all overnight excursions.  This is referred to as "BALOO" training.  Currently, Cubmaster Dan Thiem is our only trained leader.  As many of you know, Dan's time with the Pack is nearing the end as he looks to transition to Boy Scouts.

We need any potential future leaders to consider BALOO training to ensure a smooth transition.  We need a new leader trained THIS YEAR.  The training will occur on April 27th and 28th.

To the point: In approximately 1 year from now, Pack 23 will need to have a new Cubmaster and Assistant Cubmaster as Dan and Luuk both move on.  If you have any interest in carrying the torch for the Pack, please reach out.  The new leadership should be getting involved now to understand how the pack operates.

VOLUNTEER NEED: GAME / ACTIVITY FOR THE PACK - 2/21
For this years Blue and Gold pack meeting (see below) we are looking for anyone to bring forward an idea and lead a game or activity for the pack.  In discussing with the Den Leaders, we felt that the pack needed some new and fresh ideas.

This doesn't need to be elaborate, we're just looking for something fresh and fun for the group of 40+ kids to participate in during this months Pack meeting.  Duration should be 10 - 15 minutes.

Please contact Dan (dthiem2002@yahoo.com) if you would like to coordinate this.

BLUE & GOLD PACK MEETING - 2/21
Our next Pack meeting is February 21st at Forest Charter.  Since this is our Blue and Gold Banquet, we'll be starting promptly at 6:00, with setup needing to occur prior to that time.  Since centerpieces and tables need to be setup prior to 6:00, please plan to arrive at least 20 minutes early and coordinate with your Den on the setup of your table.  Just a reminder the the Blue and Gold Banquet is Dinner with the Pack, along with our sponsor, the Lions Club.

You should be coordinating the food for your potluck, centerpiece, tablecloth, place setting, and cutlery with your Den.  Each Den is responsible for their own food this year - including extra for the Lions Club.  Reach out to your Den leaders for details

CAMP LASSEN - 7/22
Our Cub Scout Summer Camp is scheduled for Sunday July 22nd  through Wednesday July 25th.  That still seems pretty far away, but the council asks for initial deposits NOW and final payments by March.

The cost for camp is $200 for the scout and $200 for the adult.  This includes all activities for the scouts, food and drinks.   Initial deposit is $50 per person that is due if you decide to sign up at the pack meeting.

If your interested, please contact Luuk (vandenbergluuk@yahoo.com) as soon as possible.

OTHER UPCOMING DATES
